Tell us a little bit about yourself. Where you grew up, went to school, what you did before playing Daily Fantasy Sports
I am Abir Chakraborty (abir1414), a big Fantasy Cricket player for almost 2 years now. I’m 20 years old and pursuing B.Tech in Civil Engineering from Jalpaiguri Govt. Engineering College (currently in 3rd year). My home town is Chandannagar, a small town in West Bengal. I am not only a big fan of cricket but I also love to work with numbers, statistics, probability, permutation and combination, profit & loss. So it was no surprise that I became a Fantasy Cricket fanatic at such a young age.
When did you start playing on HalaPlay and what was your introduction to it?
I started playing on HalaPlay in July 2017, I was already a Fantasy Cricket player on other platforms and I used to follow channels like Fantasy Cricket News (Cricinformer) back then. From there I came to know about Halaplay, and when I went through it I realised that it was clearly offering a better opportunity than any other fantasy sports platform.
My aim was to earn money online and not playing on a glamorous site. So I quit all of them and started playing on HalaPlay regularly.
Tell us a bit about your Daily Fantasy Sports journey. The struggles you had and successes.
I didn’t own a Pan card till March 2017, but I used to play fantasy sports on other sites. Since my focus was on gathering experience initially so I used to play for very small amounts. By the time I got my Pan card, I had earnt profit of around ₹4000.
Once I started playing on halaplay is when the profits jumped drastically and as of now I have already achieved profit of over ₹3 Lakh.
Maybe 3 Lakh profit seems much less than the winnings of players we keep seeing on Advertisements of other sites BUT let me make it clear that this is not my winning, it is the total profit which came in a very short time. My actual winning on HalaPlay is over ₹12 Lakh. This, I believe is enough for considering the time I invest on a daily basis and with time I’m confident of increasing it massively.
Seeing that earning through DFS takes a lot of time and dedication, how do you balance your work life with playing DFS?
The simple mantra I’d give here is:
Either give time to it OR just don’t play.
We all know fantasy cricket is a game of skill. You just can’t win through sheer luck. You need to analyse and spend fair amount of time on the research of past stats. If you are occupied with something else and are not able to invest time in the process then you shouldn’t keep high expectations of earning high amount. My usual technique is to balance the money spent with the amount of time and efforts I can put in.
Do you follow any pages / channels / sites for drafting the best combination?
I just refer the news related to player injuries and squad list, from the Apps like Cricinformer and Youtube Channels like Sports Guruji. I never take any advice on team selection, it totally depends on my instincts and groundwork.
How much does toss result factor in your team formation strategy?
Toss plays an important role in team-selection, in a 50-50 case I generally pick the bowlers who will bowl first, and the batsmen who are likely to bat first.
What is your general strategy while choosing a captain. How does this strategy change in smaller leagues like H2H?
In H2H Fantasy Leagues, it doesn’t matter whether the prospective captain is a batsman or a bowler or an all-rounder. I just compare the form in the past 10 matches and accordingly predict as to which player has best chances of earning maximum fantasy points.
Generally, for most of the cases, I pick an All Rounder in ODI & Test cricket and a Top-Order batsman in T20 format.
How many teams do you typically enter in Multi entry monsters. If more than one then what is your approach?
In monster leagues, I play with 5 teams usually if I can predict that the game could be one-sided. And 5 combination of 5C4 by picking 4 out of 5 bowlers.
How does your strategy change when you switch from big leagues to smaller leagues like H2H?
In H2H leagues, I prefer to go with the best stats, you cannot take risk in them. You can’t get lucky consistently, you can win with a risky team but if you don’t go with best stats, you will lose.
Which was your best day on HalaPlay and what do you remember about it?
Well, it was a match in the last edition of Bangladesh Premier League. That is when I won the first ever Monster League and claimed ₹10,000. I’m so glad I took Sunil Narine as he played a key role in my Grand Winning.
Later I did make profit more than this as well, but ₹10,000 mattered so much to me then, and being the very first big victory, it’s really special and a memorable feat.
On what factors does the number of leagues you play depends on, in a particular match?
It largely depends on the following factors:
- My Knowledge about that match
- My Current form
- How Big the match is (as in how big the stage is or how competitive the two teams are)
When entering many leagues, what steps do you take to minimise risk of loss?
One major problem with fantasy players is that they lose huge amount of money in a single game, either because of the greed or to make up the previous losses. And when you invest a large money, the fear factor will prevent you to play your natural game and force you to play with a safe team.
So, I tend to play with 1% of my total earning and it goes to maximum 3%, in case I am in a very good form.
How does your strategy change depending on match format (Test, T20, ODI)?
It varies in all the formats. In T20, it is generally a balanced team. For ODIs, the strategy is slightly inclined towards the batsmen while in Test Cricket, the team is preferably a good bowling side.
If you had one piece of advice to offer to a player new to DFS in terms of strategy, what would it be and why?
Start playing Fantasy Cricket with free fantasy leagues or with small amount to gather confidence. Once your tactic matures, you will swing between winning and losing streak.
Always remember ‘Form is temporary but Class is permanent’. Just like the sports players, fantasy players have form too.
If you are in a poor form don’t spend too much money, play less, and wait for your form to get at its best again.
Where do you see yourself down the road in regards to DFS? Do you want there to be a long-term thing for you? What things do you hope to accomplish as a result of DFS success?
My goal is to earn minimum ₹1.5 Lakh per year from Daily Fantasy Sports (incl. Fantasy Cricket & Fantasy Football) and then deposit it in my PPF account. I have done the calculations, if I deposit around ₹1.5 lakh every year in PPF, I’ll get close to ₹2.5 lakh per year after a time period of 15 years. The excess amount left after ₹1.5 lakh would be for my personal expenses and travel.
My long term plan might sound bit far fetch but it is for real.
Since I am quite proficient in Statistics, Probability and Profit & Loss, I sincerely plan to give an interview for a job opportunity in any of the Fantasy platforms, once my B.Tech course is over.
This is how Abir was introduced to Fantasy Sports and how it changed his life.
